Many years ago, I put an 'x' in the middle of a year and came up with an easily repeatable, mildly clever equation for summing up 365 days worth of new music into one pretty big playlist. Every year, the size of the playlist gets a little bit bigger because math.
This year of 2016 (or 20X16) will finish with a total count of 320 songs (from 320 different artists). On paper that sounds ridiculously big and that's because it kind of is. But what is even more ridiculous is that someone can easily look at all the songs / artists in my playlist and say "How could you not include So And So And The So So's?". And it gets even more ridiculous when you consider how many great tunes / artists that are out on Bandcamp but not available on Spotify… and yet somehow hitting the final giant playlist number happens year after year and I end up having to make actual difficult decisions about who to include and who to cut.
Here are past years if you want to check: 20X15, 20X14, 20X13, 20X12, 20X11, 20X10, although, it should be noted that Spotify does this thing where songs you add to a playlist just randomly disappear, so keeping things at an exact number becomes a bit like a racoon washing his sugar.
ANYWAYS… this year I've decided to split the updating of the year end playlist into quarterly updates, because trying to do it all at the end of the year is a bit of pain in the arse. So, as all you math whizzes out there have probably already clocked, we're 3/4's through 2016, which means I've just added another 80 songs to the '20X16 // 320 TUNES FROM 2016' playlist, putting the grand total at 240 songs. Throw it on shuffle below if you fancy (or pop over to Spotify if you fancy that more).
