Episode 44: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy / Perfume Genius / Leonard Cohen

Episode 44 of the Mix Tape Radio show went up on the interwebs on last week (listen to it here if you haven't already and/or grab it over on iTunes as well), so today I'll continue the task of briefly talking a little bit about each of the tracks that were featured on it. Here's 3 more of the 18 tracks featured on Episode 044

|| (00:30:23) Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Quail And Dumplings ||

When I first heard this track on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's latest album 'Singer's Grave A Sea Of Tongue', I thought “boy this guy must love himself some quail”, as it appeared to me that this was at least the 2nd time I've heard him sing about it. But it turned out that this was just a re-working of the same quail song off 'Wolfroy Goes To Town' (in fact, more than a few songs on this latest album are re-works from 'Wolfroy'). Luckily, Will is a master of doing covers of his own songs (best example: this upbeat version of the previously very downbeat 'I See A Darkness'), so this new album still manages to sound like a new album, even though it kinda isn't.

|| (00:28:10) Perfume Genius - Don't Let Them In ||

Perfume Genius knows his way around a hauntingly beautiful piano ballad. His latest album has strays away from the slow jams more than the past albums have (hello 'Queen'), but for me, it's the stripped down beauties like 'Don't Let Them In' that resonate the most. But if you haven't already, you should go give the whole thing a spin or two. It's another great album from him.

|| (00:19:00) Leonard Cohen - You Got Me Singing ||

It's hard to believe that this guy is 80. Not because he hasn't been around in our culture long enough for that number to seem too high, it's just that his latest album seems too good and cool for an 80 year old to knock out. I don't have a tonne of personal experience with 80 year olds, but I'd have to say that 100% of the 80 year olds I've met in my life would not be capable of putting together anything close to 'Popular Problems'. I guess that's why Leonard is a legend and not hogging a bench in a park somewhere.

If you haven't already, you should totally give these 3 albums your ears at some point this week. Maybe even a bit of your wallet. And while we're listing things you should do if you haven't already, you should also go listen to the episode that these tracks feature on as well. Yeah? Yeah.
