Sometimes, a certain line from a song jumps out to you. It doesn't necessarily mean that it is a necessarily clever line… but there is just something special about it. 'Hey Man, Nice Line' is where I briefly ramble about some of the lines that have jumped out to me. This is another one of those lines.
When it comes to nice lines, The Magnetic Fields are definitely not short of them. But it's the first 6 words from my favourite song of theirs —which I'm pretty sure was also my very first taste of their music— that has always jumped out at me as being exceptionally great. To be fair, this tune is pretty much one great line after another… but as good as the rest of them are, the opening line takes the first place prize in my books.
In theory, when you just look at the written version of it, it would be easy to think that there really isn't anything special about it. But have you ever heard someone sing “air quotes” before? And when combined with the context of the entire song (i.e. being skeptical about someone's romantic intentions), it's lyrical perfection.
