Welcome to another HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, that re-occurring feature where I ask a person of the internet to give us all some recommendations from their top shelf of life's 5 most important categories: Music, TV/Film, Books, Internet-ing, and ANYTHING (to make sure all bases are completely covered).
Today we're joined by Andrew Stocker from the band Horse Teeth, whose self-titled EP you should all go press play on either right now or directly after you read Andrew's suggestions for better living below. If I was you, I would pop that EP open a new tab right now, because if you were me, then your memory might be a little shit and you'll forget to come back up here.
Alright, let's cop some sweet recommendations…
#1 - WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?.
Everyone should go out and buy the forthcoming Big Thief record, “Masterpiece”.
Adrianne & Buck have had a heavy hand in soundtracking the last 3ish years for me.
Dan’s 2nd LP “It’s Alright, Just The Same” came out 5/16 via Wild Kindness and it's a damn fine record. It’s a weird thing when your best friend puts out one of your favorite records of the year. Go get that.
#2 - WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?
I don’t go to the movies very often but i’m real psyched on Green Room. My film buff friends are going nuts over it. It just hit a couple theaters out here in New York and i’m going to try and find some time in the next week or so to play a little hooky and get some quality PStew time back in my life.
Is Walk Hard on Netflix? It should be. The petition starts here.
3. I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?
My dad recently sent me a copy of Bill Milkowski’s Jaco Pastorius biography inscribed with a note that read “these guys (Weather Report) make the Stones look like a bunch of pussies.” Thanks dad. Milkowski mostly focuses on the years between 1976-82 when Jaco was at the peak of his powers with Weather Report and working with Pat Metheny on Bright Size Life. Only the good shit.
I’ve also been slowly working my way through Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. Chasing the wind through that keyhole.
#4 - WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?
Practical answer: Probably voice memos. Because then how would I slink away at parties to the bathroom to sing a melody at myself in the mirror before it flies out of my brain forever?
Fun answer: I still have yet to fully recover from the day that Waze pulled the Vlade Divac voice navigation option.
#5 - AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Let’s all quit smoking together! You go first.
OK folks, there you have it. Things that Andrew thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you go record a voice memo reminder to quit smoking… follow Andrew on Twitter and like Horse Teeth on Facebook and pop over to that tab you smartly opened at the start of this post and give that EP a listen / buy.
And maybe we can all agree to meet up here again next week to the same thing? Although, I guess I need to make sure I have another one of these lined up for that to happen. I'll go get on that (and if you're interested in doing a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, hit me up on my beeper).
