I'd like to just start of this blog post with the most important takeaway… go download this album now (it's 'name your price', so you can even grab it for free). As the title of the album clearly conveys, this is a collection of older recordings (14 to be exact). What the title doesn't convey so clearly is that this is a really great collection of really great older recordings (i.e. it is not a throw away album of old stuff that only the die hard J-McN fans would enjoy… which is a good thing, considering J-McN fans are an unfortunately small group and if they exist they probably do not refer to themselves as 'J-McN fans').
So if you only do one thing with your day, make sure it is hopping over to Bandcamp and pushing the download button.
I meant to write about / share this album back when Joseph first put it up on his Bandcamp, but I was in the middle of a website redesign and had enforced a “stop making new content you idiot, you're just making more work for yourself” rule upon myself. So I just downloaded the album and kept how great it was (mostly) to myself. I mean, I've snuck a track on an 8tracks mix here and included another on my 100 Favourite's Of 2012 list there (and you'll hear a track on this weeks episode of Mix Tape Radio), but mostly, I've just been enjoying this album privately.
But now that the 'no new content' ban has been lifted, it didn't feel right to keep the lid shut on this album any longer. Even though it is not an album in the proper sense of the word, it still plays like an album proper (aren't all albums mostly just collections of older songs anyways). This is the kind of album that you put on when you are going to spend the entire day sitting on the front porch, maturely savouring a bottle of whiskey, either by yourself or with a couple of mates. And maybe the weather isn't right for porch drinking right now. Maybe you don't even have a porch. But that doesn't mean you still can't put this on your headphones and pretend you're not just drinking a bottle of whiskey by yourself in your bedroom.
As for the picture at the top of the post, I can neither confirm nor deny whether the girl in the photo is Annie. Or Christie Lee. Or Katie. But it does appear the photo was taken on a porch, and that's all you really need to know.
