It was a long process… but there are now over 700 more songs added to the 24hr 'Mix Tape Radio by HI54LOFI' internet radio station (so the station now has over 2200 songs & over 900 artists in rotation, and more will be added). So if you've been listening so far, you should find an even greater variety then before. And if you haven't been listening… WTF? It's probably the only station in the world where you might hear Benjamin Shaw, Otis Redding, Mutual Benefit, Gorgeous Bully, Townes Van Zandt and A Tribe Called Quest all in the same hour.
Try It Out Below…
(if you can't see a music player directly below, try refreshing your page)
To tune in to this station of HI54LOFI approved tuneage, all you need is an internet connection. You can either press play on the above player (or pop it open as a new window), or you can listen to the stream in iTunes / Windows Media Player / Winamp / etc (just download and open the M3U stream in whatever music player you prefer to use). You can also get the Radionomy app for your iphone or android and listen to Mix Tape Radio on there (just search for 'HI54LOFI'). Or you can listen here or here.
While you're tuning in and enjoying the music (you have pressed play on one of the above options already, right?) I will share a bit more information about this internet radio station and then maybe you can leave some thoughts / feedback in the comments below.
First of all, this station runs 24 hours a day and if you don't live in France or the USA, it also runs completely commercial free. If you live in France / US, you'll probably hear some commercials (I think about 4 minutes of ads every hour). I don't have any control over what commercials play, but it is those commercials that pay for the artist royalties. Now, I would prefer to run an internet radio station that was hosted by myself and had no commercials (and that had a player that linked up to where you could directly buy the music), but that is super expensive. Like 100's of £'s per month (if not way more). So this seems like a decent alternative.
That being said, if you hear something you like, please seek out the artist and support them by buying their music or attending their shows. Or even just tell your friends about them. I like to think of this radio station as not only a pretty decent soundtrack to throw on at any point of the day, but also a more casual way of discovering some ace tunes (i.e. as opposed to filtering through the onslaught of daily music blog posts). Call me a pessimist, but I don't really believe that artists (especially the smaller ones) see any money from the big royalty collection agencies that make it pretty much impossible for a guy like me to run his own internet radio station. Luckily, Radionomy has decided there is business model in people like me wanting to share the music they dig (in a format that is not as 'song order written in stone' like making mix tapes can be).
That being said… there are certain listening quota's that need to be met to continue.
My station met the minimum 'listening hours per day' needed to survive the first 3 months (and after meeting that, I'm now able to upload more songs), but the next amount to meet is a lot higher. Basically, if the station isn't averaging over 130 listening hours per day by the end of the next 6 months… I think the station gets shut down.
So, if you know 129 people that you think will like the music you're listening to now (you have pressed play, right?)… can you please tell them about the 24 hour 'Mix Tape Radio by HI54LOFI' internet radio station?
And while you're telling your friends and family, I'll continue adding more music into the mix over the next few months.
Also, if you have been listening these past few months (or even if you haven't), feel free to drop off any thoughts or comments or request or whatever in the comments below.
