About a month ago, I was talking to a friend about Tom Petty. The conversation basically was about how neither of us were really all that familiar with any of the non-hits. Which we both agreed was a bit stupid, based on that fact that we loved the hits and basically everything we've heard Mr. Petty do. I vowed there and then to try and fix this obvious gap in my life.
Recently, I remembered how I was going to try and fix that. And although my intentions were pure, my approach to fixing things was possibly a bit flawed. You see, instead of making a playlist of all the Tom Petty songs that I was not familiar with, I tracked down his album Wildflowers and pressed play at the start. Now the opening title track seemed to be new to me (or at least, if I had heard it before, it was so long ago that I don't remember) and it is quite nice. So the search for Tom Petty non-hits was off to a great start.
But then You Don't Know How It Feels came on and I was instantly reminded of how awesome of a tune it is (that harmonica! that drum beat! that line about a joint!). And then I listened to it a whole bunch of times in a row. Over and over again (and included it on the latest episode of Mix Tape Radio).
So I guess I'll have to continue my personal Tom Petty Non-Hit Appreciation Studies next week, because I'm gonna need this current week to get this tune out of my head (which is why it's also my jam of the week).
